Maximising Profits

Merchant Advertising

We have found that profits are increased dramatically by selling advertising space in your book. In fact, some organizations have earned enough from their advertisers to pay for their entire order before they even sold their first book.

The big advantage to businesses advertising in your book is the fact that most ads inserted in newspapers and magazines have a very short ‘shelf life’, that is they are read and then thrown away. However, your community cookbook is different. Your book gives exposure to advertisers for many years.

Also, many businesses believe in giving back to the community that has made them successful. Let your prospective advertisers know what your cookbook profits will be used for, thereby giving them the opportunity to support your cause.

You may charge whatever you like for advertising space. As a rough guide, in one of the community cookbooks we’ve published, advertisers were charged $100.00 for a half-page ad and $55.00 for a quarter-page.

You may even decide to have a Patron Advertisement in your book. These are an effective way for individuals or groups in your community to show support for your cause. For example, a local politician may wish to buy a Patrons Advertisement congratulating your group on the launch of your book.

How it can work:

  • Take an order for 200 books
  • You sell five half page adds at $100 each and five quarter page adds at $55.00 each
  • You sell the book for $12.00
